Redwork embroidery is a simple and timeless technique stitched in a single shade of thread. When it first became popular in the late 1800s, red was the only dye that was reliably colorfast, making it the perfect choice for embroidery. As dyeing processes improved, other colors were introduced, but the classic look of redwork has remained a favorite ever since.

Because the designs are created with simple outlines and very little filled stitching, redwork embroidery is quick, relaxing, and easy to complete—perfect for stitchers of all skill levels. These charming embroidered blocks are the centerpiece of my quilt pattern, Words to Live By.
